Sam initially comes off as gruff and somewhat lethargic, sitting somewhere between logical thinking and a gung-ho action soldier. More of a scientist by trade, Sam can almost seem humanitarian even while gunning down faceless R.I.'s. He's sarcastic and a little on the offensive when it comes to making jokes on the battlefield. On or off, however, Sam is dedicated to his allies and will stop to assist them, even if it means putting his own neck on the line.
While mostly just a researcher and developer at DARPA, Sam has put time into personally working out all the kinks in the ARS (Augmented Reaction Suit). A brilliant but sometimes crass man, Sam in't all guns and glory. At his core, the DARPA operative likes the action of battles, but wouldn't actively take lives if he didn't need to. On multiple accounts, Sam has put his own life on the line to save other soldiers in scraps and consistently butts heads with Lieutenant Colonel Robert Burns, who would rather sacrifice a few to save many. The only time Sam is seen actively killing living beings is at a time where if he didn't, thousands of innocents would be killed as well. Even after Burns turns on him and kills Candide, as well as trying to kill him, Sam still attempts to help the fatally wounded man.
While he'd rather think and plan some things, Sam can't seem to help but enjoy the idea of running in, guns blazing. With Elena Ivanova at his back, Sam is sometimes free to let her do the thinking. Still something of a jock from his college days, he enjoys being in the fray. Regardless, Sam uses his brain a lot more than normal soldiers and thinks quickly on his feet.
Thinking quickly also comes to sarcasm and quips exchanged with comrades. Sam isn't exactly a smooth-talker, but he is charming in his own right. He adapts to situations quickly and uses the rest of his time to joke with his allies of the time, exchanging quips and jokes ranging from one-liners to puns and nothing is really taboo. With the camaraderie comes Sam's loyalty. Multiple times, he's shown holding up the company of soldiers just to assist one trapped or to get others through to a safer place. Aside from fighting, he also serves in assisting the wounded, dodging fire and R.I.'s to get to allies.
He seems to have a close relationship with his coworkers off the battlefield as well. He appears to care for Elena and Professor Candide, trusting them with the testing of the ARS and repairs to the unit. He regularly tries to keep them out of harm's way, risking life and limb to get Candide back after a kidnapping situation.
